An introduction to Pony Club in South Africa

Pony Club is an International voluntary youth organisation and is the largest association of riders in the world. Pony Club in South Africa is part of the world wide Association of Pony Clubs, which is represented in fourteen countries, with a membership in excess of 110 000.

The objectives of Pony Club are:

  • To encourage young people to ride and to learn to enjoy a variety of horse-related and riding sport.
  • To provide instruction in riding and horsemanship.
  • To instil in members the proper care of their animals.
  • To promote the highest ideals of sportsmanship, citizenship and loyalty, thereby cultivating strength of character and self discipline.

The South African Pony Club hosts monthly rallies at all branches. These rallies expose members to quality horse-riding instruction, horse-care awareness workshops and a variety of fun events.
Other activities in which our members take part are camps, trail rides, horse trials, mounted games and quizzes.

We are in regular contact with Pony Clubs in other African countries as well as Britain, New Zealand, Australia, the USA and Canada. In recent years, members of the SA Pony Club have participated in International Competitions with these countries both at home and abroad.

Pony Club and a career in horses

The proficiency tests of the South African Pony Club are recognised and accepted around the world. They are also considered to be the best qualification for any youngster to obtain in the hopes of starting a career with horses. Pony Club has been, and continues to be, the nursery of many great riders and horse masters.

Safety of both horse and rider is an important aspect of our work. Members are trained on how to optimally care for their horses and ponies.
Manners, good sportsmanship and fair-play are emphasised in Pony Club with the highest ideals of good citizenship being the key focus. Team spirit is paramount in the movement.

SA Pony Club is divided into five regions, with nearly sixty branches, and we are growing all the time.

Where in all the world is nobility found without conceit? Where is there friendship without envy? Where is beauty without vanity? Here one finds gracefulness coupled with power, and strength tempered with gentleness. A constant servant, yet no slave. A fighter, ever without hostility. Our history was written on his back. We are his heirs. But he is his own heritage, the horse. H. H. Eisenbart
